This morning the passengers of the toy train that operates between Mettupalayam and Coonoor had a thrilling and memorable moment, as a herd of elephants stood right on the tracks at the Runnymede Railway Station near Kattery Park.

As the train got closer the elephants got away from the tracks yet stood along the fringes of the tracks. The passengers were asked to remain calm and stay away from clicking pictures as it could provoke them to launch an attack.

The railway staff along with the forest officials burnt small pieces of woods to chase them away into the forests. But the elephants paid no heed to the attempts and remained to stay on the tracks.
Due to lack of fodder and water in the forests, elephants and bisons have started to infiltrate into the residential and nearby villages adjacent to the forests. Especially the Kallar river which a main source of water for wild animals has almost dried up, hence movement of wild animals has drifted course.
