Coimbatore: The northeast monsoon has intensified across Tamil Nadu and it has been raining heavily. Water bodies are fast filling up due to the heavy rains. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the rains will continue across Tamil Nadu till November 16.

Heavy rains continued to lash Coimbatore from Sunday evening due to which rainwater overflowed into major parts of the city. All the eight tanks in Coimbatore city were filled to the brim. Due to this, the surplus water will be released to reach Sengulam via Noyyal river and from there the water will flow into the Kurichi tank through the Raja Channel.

Several places on both sides of the Mettupalayam national highway from Thudiyalur police station under Kurudampalayam Panchayat in Coimbatore to NGGO Colony gate were flooded at several places. The desilting of bridges near Thudiyalur police station and near Kurudampalayam Old Panchayat has also resulted in the dumping of building waste.

Mettupalayam road in Coimbatore was flooded with rainwater and the entire road was damaged. Motorists faced a lot of difficulty and were further affected by the rainwater overflowing near a nearby apartment.

Based on a request made by the public to the District Collector in this regard, the National Highways Department carried out desilting of the drain for a 1 km stretch. The Assistant Executive Engineer of the National Highways assured the public in the area that the desilting work will continue.
