District Collector Amrith inaugurated a programme to create awareness about AIDS through folk arts on behalf of The Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society at the Nilgiris District Collectorate premises.
The Nilgiris: World AIDS Day is observed every year on December 1.
While the day is being observed with the aim of controlling AIDS, an awareness campaign through folk arts will be held in the Nilgiris district for 10 days.
District Collector Amrith inaugurated an awareness campaign organised by the Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society at the Collectorate premises in The Nilgiris.
Awareness will be created among the public in all the villages of the district through karagattam, oyilaattam, mayilaattam and plays on AIDS and STDs.
The event will be held in various hilly villages of the district till March 23 and at places where people gather in large numbers in key areas including Coonoor, Kotagiri and Gudalur.
To make the public aware of AIDS and to get rid of the fear of HIV, To prevent actions such as exclusion-neglect of people infected with HIV from taking place, Officials said the event was aimed at preventing the spread of AIDS.
District Project Manager Arivazhagan, laboratory technicians and others participated in the awareness programme.
