Tomatoes dumped on road due to disease outbreak, lack of adequate price; Farmers in distress

In Coimbatore, farmers dumped the tomatoes they had brought for sale on the roadside due to non-availability of proper price for tomatoes and also due to disease outbreak.

Coimbatore: Tomato cultivation has been the main occupation in Thondamuthur, Madukkarai and Pollachi areas of Coimbatore district. At present, the yield of tomatoes has increased.

Due to this, tomatoes grown in and around Madukkarai in Coimbatore are piling up in heaps in the Nachipalayam tomato market. Meanwhile, it is said that the tomatoes were not sold in the market due to the recent incessant rains causing tomatoes to rot.

In this situation, the tomatoes brought for sale were dumped by the farmers on the Palathurai Road, while a few more farmers were reportedly in distress due to lack of proper sale price despite having sufficient yields in their fields.

Agriculture officials said that to solve the problem, the farmers should pluck the affected tomatoes out so that the next tomato produce will be proper.
