Taxi drivers, owners go on hunger strike to press for various demands in Coimbatore

Over 500 people raised slogans as they participated in the hunger strike staged by taxi drivers in the Tatabad area of Coimbatore.

Coimbatore: The Joint Committee of cab drivers and owners of all associations in Coimbatore district are on a one-day token hunger strike in the Tatabad area to press for various demands.

Speaking to reporters in this regard, the cab drivers and owners expressed the following demands:

1) All Max Cab rental vehicles in Tamil Nadu should be issued a 19+1 seat permit based on the number of passengers.

2) Provision should be made for issuance of temporary passes at check posts on the state border as was the practice earlier when rental vehicles go to neighbouring states.

3) The Government of Tamil Nadu should simplify the process of downloading temporary outstation passes online which will come into effect at a later date.

4) If the drivers are caught carrying passengers in their own vehicles, with the help of the police, the RTO officials should seize the vehicle. The owner of the vehicle should also be fined as per the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.

5) Taxis plying on the roads are stopped on the roads and the taxi drivers are levied a fine of Rs. 5000 and Rs.10,000 in the name of penalty, citing some reason or the other. This rule should be withdrawn.

6) The Government of Tamil Nadu should reconsider the increase of all registration charges in the Regional Transport Office.

7) The Tamil Nadu Government should recommend to the Centre to reduce the hike in diesel and petrol prices and bring it under GST.

8) Provision should be made for the supply of diesel at subsidised rates to all the owners of rental vehicles having ration cards.

9) Departmental action should be taken against officials who say that the replacement device should be installed in case the speed control device is in good condition in the vehicles going to the RTO office FC.

10) The basic requirement of toilets should be provided to the drivers at tourist sites in a hygienic manner.

The protesters demanded that the Tamil Nadu Government should take note of such demands and get them fulfilled at the earliest. Due to the agitation by the rental vehicle owners, the public in Coimbatore district is facing a lot of difficulties due to the non-availability of rental vehicles.
