The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC), in a new tender to be floated by it on November 29, plans to buy 100 electric vehicles for door-to-door collection of solid waste.
According to sources in CCMC, the vehicles are to collect waste from each house in 100 wards. The Corporation is likely to procure the vehicles in two months to help workers and keep the city free from the open dumping of solid waste menace.
“At present, we have more than 200 such vehicles and will be buying a 100 more Tata Ace vehicles at the cost of more than Rs. 7 crores. It is to cater to the need,” said a source from the Corporation.
However, the Corporation still uses pushcarts to collect garbage and to end this, the civic body has decided to buy electric vehicles, which will help collect garbage more effectively. City Health Officer Pradheep Krishnakumar told SimpliCity that there were 11 Micro Composting Centres and that garbage collection in the city limits was smooth.
