The farmers have resorted to a novel protest by rallying towards the city's famed Puliyakulam Vinayagar temple to petition the Almighty to intervene and stop the government's move to set up a SIPCOT industrial park by acquiring acres of agricultural lands in Annur and Mettupalayam taluks.
Coimbatore: Ever since the state government issued an order this November giving administrative sanction for the acquisition of 3,731.6 acres in six villages in Annur and Mettupalayam taluks to set up State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) industrial park, the farmers of the region are staging a slew of protests opposing against the acquisition of agricultural lands for the project.
Reliable sources say that TIDCO officials have completed the survey of lands in Pallipalayam, Pogalur, Kuppanur, Akkarai Sengapalli, Vadakkalur panchayats in Annur taluk, and Illuppanatham and Bellepalayam panchayats in Mettupalayam taluk in the district for the implementation of the said project.
Meanwhile, the farmers who are against giving up their agricultural lands for the project decided to show their dissent in a novel way, by petitioning the Almighty.

Pointing that all their efforts to garner the attention of the department officials and the state government has fallen on deaf ears, the farmers stated that they have resorted to petitioning Puliyakulam Vinayagar, to shower mercy on them, and save their prime lands and livelihood.

It is to be noted that hundreds of farmers took out a vehicle rally in Othimalai and besieged the Annur taluk office on November 22, as a part of the ongoing protest.
Showing support to the agitating farmers, who are against acquisition of their precious agriculturl lands for setting up a industrial park, AIADMK Headquarters Secretary and Former Minister S.P. Velumani also joined with the protestesters.
