Sudden landslides on the road at the 13th hairpin bend on the Coonoor-Mettupalayam ghat route caused traffic to come to a standstill. The Fire Department had to rush to the spot to clear the debris.
The Nilgiris: The Coonoor area of Nilgiris district has been receiving heavy rains for the past few days, causing landslides at isolated places.
Due to this, motorists faced difficulties with a sudden traffic jam on the Coonoor-Mettupalayam ghat route.
Even as debris fell on the road at the 13th hairpin bend, traffic came to a standstill and alarmed motorists had to wait for the fire brigade to clear traffic.
On information, the fire brigade rushed to the spot immediately and removed the debris to restore traffic.
Traffic on the Coonoor-Mettupalayam ghat route was disrupted for over an hour due to the landslides caused by continuous rains and roads being dug up for road-widening works.
According to officials of the Highways Department, the tremors caused due to heavy movement of vehicles and rains resulted in the landslides. Major mishaps were averted since no vehicles had passed through at the exact moment when the landslide occurred.
