Mayor Kalpana Anandakumar ordered the immediate vacation of the cattle farm at the Vellalore garbage dump premises without obtaining permission from the Corporation.
Coimbatore: Garbage collected daily in all the 100 wards of the Corporation is graded at the garbage depot at Vellalore in Coimbatore.
A cattle farm was being run without permission in the vacant plots at the Vellalore garbage dump and no action has been taken by authorities despite them being aware of the cattle farm.
It is alleged that the cattle farm is being run with the help of Councillors. There were also complaints that some groups were collecting garbage from the garbage dump without permission.
Due to a series of complaints, Coimbatore Corporation Mayor Kalpana made a surprise inspection of the Vellalore garbage dump premises on December 1.
Following the inspection, the Mayor questioned the officials about the visible violations there. The Mayor questioned them on how the cattle farm was functioning without taking any tender from the Corporation.
The Mayor ordered for the cattle farm to be vacated by January 1, 2023. She warned the authorities and the owner of the cattle farm that strict action would be taken if they did not comply with the order.
Over the years, the Coimbatore Corporation has faced a major challenge in the maintenance of the Vellalore garbage depot, such as segregation of garbage, conversion of garbage into manure, environmental degradation and opposition from the residents of the area. It is to be noted that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has already issued an order to dispose of all the garbage in the dumping ground in a period of 15 months.
