City organizations issue joint statement on the viability of new fly over projects in the city

After participating in the Public hearing, which presided over by Minister Senthil Balaji at the Collectorate here today, the organizations that took part in the hearing have issued a joint statement on the pressing need and viability of new fly over projects in the city.

Coimbatore: In a joint statement, the Kongu Global Forum, Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Codissia, CII, Resident Awareness Association of Coimbatore (RAAC), Racecourse and Neighborhood Association, RANA Coimbatore consumer cause have out lined the issues discussed in the public hearing

According to the organizations “Even though the following projects were approved by the Government on NH 181 at Singanallur on Trichy road, Saibaba kovil on Mettupalayam road, and NH 948 at Saravanampatty on Sathyamangalam road, since it's a black spot but it was kept pending due to a communication from CMR” the statement said

“About 50,000 passenger car units use this road everyday which makes it difficult to commute. Since the road holding capacity is fully utilized and the chances to expand without further land acquisition is remote, the only option available is going vertical by building flyovers at critical intersections” the joint statement of the organizations said.

Members from Industrial Associations, Trade bodies, Resident Associations, Consumer Forums, Train Passengers Association, Corporation Council members, District administration, Highways department, Corporation officials and many other bodies participated in the meeting.

The opinions from various sections of the society were heard by V. Senthil Balaji, Hon’ble Minister for Electricity, Prohibition and Excise, Govt Of Tamilnadu.

“While the members insisted the Government to build the three flyovers immediately and also requested the authorities to start the proceedings for the construction of Metro train facility in Coimbatore” the joint statement said

“The flyover infrastructure need not be stopped for the metro train service and both are important for the development of the economy. The Metro train facility is not an alternate solution for the flyover and the importance for both to exist was emphasized by members” the statement said.

Alternate ideas for the Metro alignment were suggested. The existing circular railway line around Coimbatore city along with the missing link in Nanjundapuram was proposed in the meeting by the members. In this case there will be a very minimum land that needs to be acquired fir the Metro project in Coimbatore.

“Trichy road and Avinashi road need not be the only solution for the public to commute from the city centre to the suburbs of Coimbatore. Alternate pathways must be promoted to decongest the transportation” they demanded..

The importance to acquire land in Sathiyamangalam road and expansion of the existing road from Textool flyover till Kovilpalayam was also discussed.

It was suggested in the meeting that a two tier flyover with the first level for motor vehicles and second level for Metro from Textool to Saravanampatty was built in the future.

“After hearing every one's opinion, the Hon’ble Minister assured that the opinion of the people in Coimbatore will be respected by the Government of Tamil Nadu and it would be conveyed to the Hon’ble Chief Minister who will decide on this subject at the earliest possible time” the joint statement of organizations said.
