Array of eye-catching ‘Pongal’ pots kept for sale near Kavundampalayam

On the occasion of Pongal festival the aesthetically painted Pongal pots have come up for sale and there is a growing demand for earthen pots.


Coimbatore: Thai Pongal is one of the most significant festivals that showcase the heritage of Tamils to the world. Every year, the first day of Thai is celebrated as Pongal festival by the Tamil speaking world.

During this Pongal festival, which is said to be the harvest festival, it is customary to make Pongal in earthen pots, offer sugarcane in order to thank the Sun God.



The pongal pots, which are made of chosen clay, have started coming up for sale.



These earthen pots are made by selecting quality clay and seasoning them in phases.



The earthen pots so created are dried in the shade for about a week. It becomes suitable for use only after it is then placed in the kiln and baked.



Gone are the days when these earthen pots were sold as they were. Now the vendors have started beautifying and selling them according to the tastes of the general public.



The sellers are seen beautifying the earthen pots that are ready for sale in Kavundampalayam area of Coimbatore. Decorating the pots differently with various colour dyes such as green, yellow, red, have raised its aesthetic appeal. They have been stacked on roadsides for sale to attract customers.

Even though Pongal pots are available in brass, copper, and stainless steel, more people prefer to make Pongal in earthen pots. The demand for Pongal pots have only increased by the day.
