Measles outbreak on calves donated to a temple near Udumalpet

The calves donated by devotees to the Arulmigu Aalkondamal Temple at Somavarpatti near Udumalpet were infected with measles. Treatment and monitoring with the help of veterinarians underway.

Tirupur: It is customary for devotees to donate calves to the Arulmigu Aalkondamal Temple at Somavarpatti near Udumalai in Tirupur district. Devotees from different parts of the state came to the temple from the January 16th and started donating the calves.

The temple authorities used to charge Rs 1,000 as maintenance fee for the calves thus obtained. In this scenario, the donated calves were found to have a measles attack.

Following this, the temple authorities isolated the infected calves. With the help of veterinary doctors, they have been treating and monitoring for the last two days.

There have been allegations that the temple administration has not disclosed information on the number of calves received as donations and security arrangements.

Also, the temple administration has been reprimanded for messing up the festival arrangements, collecting extra entry fee and creating confusion over the maintenance of the calves. It is to be noted that it has been decided to join the protest on behalf of Hindu organisations.
