Coimbatore: Siruthuli’s Managing Trustee Vanitha Mohan was honoured by the Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi with an award under the 'Environment Protection' category. Along with a citation, a reward of Rs.10 lakhs was also presented to her.

Siruthuli’s pillars of focus are Water Conservation, Afforestation, Waste Management, Awareness Creation and Promotion of Agriculture.

Under the Water Conservation vertical – Water Watch – various projects like desilting of ponds and lakes, construction and creation of check dams, creation of new ponds, etc., have been executed across 17 lakes, 20 pounds, 7 percolation ponds, 30 streams and 10 check dams resulting in an enhanced storage capacity of over 86 lakh cubic meters. In addition, construction of over 800 rainwater structures in the region has significantly increased the groundwater levels.

Water holes for providing drinking water for wild animals in the reserve forest area of the region have proved to be very successful. More such water holes are to be taken up for construction.

Under the Afforestation vertical – Green Guard – over 7 lakh trees have been planted – both spaced as well as dense Miyawaki plantations – to increase the green cover of the region.

Most significant among the plantation sites are the Anna University Campus, Bharathiar University Campus, CRPF, lands belonging to the Railways at Podanur, Singanallur, Thudiyalur, Ondipudur, besides, several Panchayat reserve sites like Perur Chettipalayam and Peedampalli. As a result, significant changes have been recorded in the biodiversity pattern of the plantation sites, encouraging Siruthuli to take on more such plantations.

The latest foray into the green space creation activity is the promotion of 'Maadi Vanam' – growing trees in pots on terraces thereby helping to bring down the temperature caused by radiation.

Through Siruthuli's awareness initiatives, over 2 million people's lives have been touched. Workshops and awareness programs are conducted mostly for the student and farming community, besides residential associations.

Siruthuli has now moved beyond the boundaries of Coimbatore District to initiate water conservation activities in Pudukottai District, Sivaganga District, Erode, Karur, Cuddalore, Chennai, etc.

A reconstructed website was recently launched which provides adequate information about the various projects of Siruthuli, volunteering opportunities and technology updates.

Going forward, Siruthuli's focus will be on treating waste water which is posing a huge challenge to the quality of groundwater. Sewage which is being let into the water bodies not only pollutes the ground water but also contaminates good rain water, making it unfit for consumption.

This reward amount of Rs.10 lakhs received from the honourable Governor of Tamil Nadu, R N Ravi will be used for watershed development in the Narasipuram area very close to the forest border. Several check dams in the area which have become defunct will be taken up for restoration besides desilting of the adjoining areas. This, we believe will benefit over 2000 acres of farming land by the increase in ground water level.
