The protesters demanded that all those who have obtained a job guarantee card under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme should be given regular work under the scheme.
Tirupur: The Tamil Nadu Agricultural Workers Union and AITUC staged a protest in front of the Elayamuthur panchayat office near Udumalpet alleging that the Centre was trying to stall the scheme MGNREGS scheme, otherwise known as the 100-day employment programme by allocating fewer funds.

The protesters demanded that all those who have obtained a job guarantee card under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act be given regular work under the scheme.

“The statutory pay of Rs. 281 per day fixed by the Government should not be deducted,“ the protesters said and added that “caste discrimination should not be practised among workersâ€
The protesters also wanted work timings should be changed to 9 am from 8 am.
Elaiyamuthur Thambiraj, Syed, Maruthamuthu, Venkatachalam and others took part in the protest.
