Coimbatore: Water tanks have been set up at seven places near Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district for wildlife to drink water.
The Mettupalayam forest is one of the largest forest with an area of 10,000 hectares. The forest area is home to a large number of protected wildlife such as leopard, tiger, wild elephant, bison, red dog and bear.
In this situation, with the summer season approaching, the drought has started in Mettupalayam forest area. Due to this, its impact across the forest area is beginning to increase.
Due to this, the trees, plants and vines in the forest are drying up, leading to the emergence of wild animals from the forest area for food and water purposes.
Especially in the forest areas of Mettupalayam such as Jakkanari, Kandiyur and Ulikal, where wild elephants are herded in large numbers, at present, the forest department is actively engaged to meet their water requirement.
Accordingly, the forest department is already in the process of upgrading the artificial water tanks in the dense forest area under Mettupalayam forest range.
Accordingly, in order to meet the water needs of wildlife only in the current season, new water tanks are being set up at 7 locations in the dense forest.
A borewell has been constructed at a cost of Rs 13 lakh at a cost of Rs 13 lakh and solar-powered motors have been installed to fill the water tanks.
The forest department, which is studying the current water stock as the existing percolation ponds are drying up due to drought, said they would fill the water through trucks if required.
According to the forest department, the water requirement of the wildlife will be met in the dense forest itself and the wildlife will not be able to leave the forest.
