'City airport runway renovation work completed, it has become fully operational from March 27' - Airport Director Senthil Valavan

The runway renovation work at Coimbatore airport though begun in August last year has been delayed due to various factors.


Coimbatore: Even as the runway renovation carried out at the City airport has been completed it has become fully operational since Monday last (March 27), said Airport Director Senthil Valavan

According to Airport Director Senthilvalavan, the restoration work of the runway at Coimbatore civil airport has been delayed due to inclement weather conditions including rain and fog

According to sources, Coimbatore International Airport operates 23 flights daily. International flights to Sharjah are operated five days a week, and Singapore on all days.

It is customary for runways at airports to be reconstructed once in 10 years.

The runway renovation work at Coimbatore airport though begun in August last year has been delayed due to various factors.

As a result, flights are operated only from 6 am to 10 pm and suspended during night time.

Airport Director Senthil Valavan said, "it is very challenging to carry out runway reconstruction work. All measures, including the quality of the materials used, and specified climatic conditions, are vital for the execution”.

“These works have been now completed and at various night time flight services to be resumed,” he said.

“ Flight services to Sharjah and Singapore which have been rescheduled due to the renovation work, have been allowed to resume operations as per the old schedule. The Sharjah flight, which landed at the City airport at 4 am took off at 4.45 am and flight services to Chennai and Bengaluru will resume their operations till 11 pm soon,” he added.

“Many new announcements could be expected from the first week of April as the summer vacation season is all set to begin soon”. he said.
