5 tonnes of ration rice smuggled near Ukkadam - 8 vehicles including lorry seized

Pollachi Civil Supplies CID police have seized eight vehicles, including a truck, which was trying to smuggle five tonnes of ration rice to other states during raids at two different places near Ukkadam.



Coimbatore: The Civil Supplies and Fruits Department police have seized eight vehicles that were trying to smuggle 5 tonnes of ration rice near Ukkadam in Coimbatore district.

The Civil Supplies Cid, after taking over as Additional Director General of Police, Chennai, Arun IPS, after taking over, ordered strict action against those involved in crimes related to smuggling and hoarding of PDS ration rice across Tamil Nadu.

Following this, the Pollachi Civil Supplies Criminal Investigation Police under the supervision of Coimbatore Regional Superintendent of Police Balaji divided into two teams led by Inspector Vivekanandan and Sub-Inspector Kalaiselvan of Coimbatore at 05.00 am today (25.03.2023) and carried out intensive vehicle checking in Coimbatore areas.



Meanwhile, when a truck was checked suspiciously parked at an undisclosed location on the Ukkadam-Selvapuram road, it was found that it contained a total of 3,000 kg of ration rice supplied by the Tamil Nadu government at the rate of about 50 kg each in 60 bags at the rate of about 50 kg under the Public Distribution System.



The ration rice was seized and when investigated, it was found that the lorry belonged to Abhi alias Abib Rahman, a resident of Anna Nagar in South Ukkadam. Abhi alias Abib Rahman has gone into hiding. He has already been arrested eight times. He was also in jail under the Goondas Act.



Similarly, when the si kalaiselvan led police were checking a vehicle near madukkarai tree bridge, they stopped the speeding pickup van and checked it and found that it contained about 2,000 kg of PDS ration in 40 bags of about 50 kg each.



Rajesh, a driver from Kerala, who was driving the vehicle, was questioned. During the investigation, it was revealed that Kutty Rajendran of P.K. Puthur in Kuniyamuthur, his nephew Surya and Sabir of Valaiyar had purchased it from the public in Kuniyamuthur areas at a low price and sent them to sell them in Kerala illegally.



Eight vehicles used for smuggling and ration rice have been seized in both the above cases. The driver, Surya, has been arrested and remanded in judicial custody.

The police are on the lookout for the four absconding accused - Abhi alias Abhipragman, Kutty Rajendran, Surya and Sabir.
