At the Dharapuram farmers market, farmers from the neighbourhood offer tomatoes for sale. Tomatoes, which cost Rs 9 per kg, have been accused of being sold as substandard tomatoes because farmers are allegedly selling them in boxes without providing them to retailers.
Tirupur: People claim that the Dharapuram farmers' market sells vegetables that are of poor quality.
In the Tiruppur District, Uzhavar Market is open in Anna Nagar, Dharapuram. The tomatoes are stacked in boxes and brought here for sale by growers from the neighbourhood.
Tomatoes are therefore priced at Rs 9 per kg in retail form at the producers' market. Tomatoes are instead sold to traders by farmers in boxes containing 15 kg rather than at retail prices.
The general population complains that only poor quality tomatoes are being sold. Even if a grower visits the market to purchase high-quality tomatoes, those tomatoes are also being sold there.
The public has demanded that the administrative officer of the uzhavar market take action against the farmers who are selling vegetables in bulk and take steps to make all the vegetables available to the public who purchase them at retail.
