Say goodbye to roadside vegetables shops: Farmers react at Dharapurm market

According to a complaint made to the Dharapuram municipality office, the roadside stalls working close to the uzhavar market in Dharapuram are unable to sell the veggies that the farmers bring to the farmers' market and are forced to sell the vegetables to brokers.

Tirupur: In the municipality of Dharapuram, a petition was submitted by Gopalakrishnan, a representative of the Tamil Nadu Farmers Protection Association.

"They are stealing the farmers' means of subsistence by operating illegal vegetable shops on the sides of all the roads outside of the Dharapuram Uzhavar Market.

The problem is still present, and no long-term remedy has been found, despite numerous complaints to the Dharapuram Municipal Commissioner and the divisional tahsildar officer. Farmers who brought produce to the market are forced to give it back to brokers because they are unable to sell it there.

On September 26, 2022, as per Circular No. 48 45 2022, the Directorate of Administration, Government of Tamil Nadu Municipalities issued a directive to corporation municipalities and town panchayats throughout Tamil Nadu instructing them not to permit illegal roadside vegetable shops near uzhavar market. As a result, on the premise of that circular, the proper action should be taken, and the farmers' way of life should be safeguarded.
