400+ workers left unpaid for months: City Corporation school employees speak out on Grievance Redressal day

The city corporation administers 93 corporate schools, employing approximately 400 people on a contract basis. Three employees per school, including a watchman and a sanitary worker, are not paid the assigned amount and are paid irregularly.

Coimbatore: On Tuesday, workers at City Corporation schools petitioned on Corporation grievance redressal day.

They alleged that their salary for the previous three months had not been paid.

The city corporation administers 93 corporate schools, with approximately 400 employees engaged on a contract basis. Three people per school, including a watchman and a sanitary worker, are not paid the allocated amount and are paid irregularly.

N Panneerselvam, coordinator of the Coimbatore Sanitary Workers Labour Union Federation, and a few workers petitioned the city Mayor.

It was claimed that the workers were only paid Rs.250 per day, while the amended figure was Rs.484 per day. Despite having allotted the new amount, no procedures to monitor the right apportionment have been taken.

"The issue of contractual workers is wide-ranging, with the majority of them unaware of their revised wages and still struggling with the provided wage, which is insufficient for survival."

Taking advantage of their ignorance is a massive fraud."

The petitioners claimed that they were unaware of their contractors or any additional administrators. Corporation School sanitation employees in Seeranaickenpalayam, PN Pudur, and other regions claimed the same.

Madhana has been a sanitary worker at Seeranaickenpalayam School for almost 15 years. "We've been dealing with the same problem for the last five years," she asserted. We simply work for family needs, but the administration is unconcerned about our survival."

"I live with my husband who works for a daily wage and earns very little," Manimekalai, another PN Pudur school employee, said.

My child is dropped off at a local Anganwadi. Managing the family has gotten difficult because our money has been withheld for more than three months and we have not received the amended payment."
