Farmers held a sit-in at the sub-collector's office, demanding that steps be taken to prevent sewage water from accumulating in agricultural land near Pollachi.
Coimbatore: Farmers held a dharna at the Pollachi sub-collector's office.
On Tuesday, a meeting to discuss farmers' issues was held at the Sub-Collector's office in Pollachi, Coimbatore district.
Farmers from all over Pollachi attended the meeting and voiced their concerns to sub-collector Priyanka.
The entire waste water in ten villages around Puliyampatti village near Pollachi lies stagnant on several acres of nearby farmland, polluting well water.
On Tuesday, they petitioned the sub-collector, claiming that the cattle were sick, the coconut trees were wilting, and the residents in adjacent villages were suffering from diseases.
After a heated argument, the farmers unexpectedly launched a dharna in the conference hall. They claimed that despite four petitions submitted at the farmers' grievance redressal meeting, no action was taken by the authorities.
They asked that if the rainy season begins, sewage water will enter the farms again and cause deterioration, and that a solution be found immediately.
The farmers called off the protest after sub-collector Priyanka, who inquired into the incident, assured them that action would be taken on a war footing.
