Tamil Nadu Govt. demands ban on check dam across Siruvani river

The Kerala government has constructed a 5 ft.-high check dam at Nellipathi on the Attappadi Goolikadavu-Chittoor road across the Siruvani river, with almost 90 percent of the work completed. Thanthai Periyar Kazhagam's General Secretary, K Ramakrishnan has demanded that the Government should take steps to stop the work.

Coimbatore: Thanthai Periyar Kazhagam General Secretary, K Ramakrishnan has demanded that the Tamil Nadu Government should immediately intervene and stop the construction of a check dam across the Siruvani river.

The Thanthai Periyar Kazhagam's General Secretary, K Ramakrishnan said, "The Kerala Government has constructed a five-feet-high check dam at Nellipathi on the Attappadi Goolikadavu-Chittoor road across the Siruvani river, which is the source of drinking water for Coimbatore district. With 90 percent of the work completed, they are now planning to construct two more check dams.

The Kerala Government is already preventing the Siruvani Dam from retaining water to the full capacity of 52-feet during the rainy season. The Government is now constructing check dams to ensure that the water that comes in the summer season does not reach the Siruvani dam.

The Siruvani and Bhavani rivers are under the control of the Cauvery Management Board but the Kerala Government is constructing check dams at Siruvani without obtaining permission from the Cauvery Management Board.

If these check dams are not stopped, Coimbatore district will face a complete shortage of water. The Government of Tamil Nadu should immediately intervene and stop the construction of check dams at Siruvani as it has already constructed similar check dams on Bhavani river."

"If the Kerala Government does not abandon the project, we warn that all parties, organisations and the general public will have to come together to launch a massive agitation," he added.
