Then Kailaya Bhakti Peravai kickstarts annual cleanliness drive of Velliangiri Hills

Naval Officers join the devotees in sprucing the hills. The drive is being conducted in collaboration with the Forest Department, Tamil Nadu Government and will continue every Sunday till June 4.

Coimbatore: In an effort to protect the environment of Velliangiri Hills, Then Kailaya Bhakti Peravai kickstarted its annual environmental cleanliness drive on Sunday.

Shivanga devotees from various districts of Tamil Nadu, along with naval officers who were on a visit to INS Agrani, actively participated in this cleanliness drive.

Plastic bottles, covers and other wastes left behind by trekkers were collected and brought to the foothill of the Velliagiri Hills.

The Velliangiri Hills located in Coimbatore is a place of historical and spiritual significance. Legends state that Shiva himself meditated on these hills, earning the place its name 'Southern Kailash.' Owing to challenging climatic conditions, trekking up the hill is allowed only during the summers, which witnesses a huge flock of devotees thronging to the place. Cleanliness drives thus become imperative in maintaining the pristine environment of the hills.

Then Kailaya Bhakti Peravai has been spearheading the cleanliness drive for the past 10 years. The drive is being conducted in collaboration with the Forest Department, Tamil Nadu Government and will continue every Sunday (May 14, 21, 28 till June 4). Interested volunteers can register by calling on 83000 15111.
