Elephant Census in Coimbatore District Forest Range

The combined elephant census for 2023 was carried out in all forest areas in four states including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. It was attended by forest rangers and forest activists.



Coimbatore: An elephant census was conducted in the forest range areas of Coimbatore district today.

The combined elephant census for the year 2023 was conducted in all forest areas in four states including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm today.

In Coimbatore district, elephant census was carried out in 42 blocks in 7 forest ranges including Madukkarai, Coimbatore, Booluvampatti, Mettupalayam Sirumugai, Periyanaickenpalayam and Karamadai.

Forest rangers, forest guards, forest officers, forest activists and NGOs have been divided into groups each and five to seven persons have been attached to a group for the task of enumerating the elephants.

A manual for the elephant census has been provided to each group. A total of 84 forest ranges, 88 forest activists and forest officers were involved in the survey in the forest area of Coimbatore district, which has 7 forest ranges.



On the movement of elephants in the forest areas and the areas in which the elephants have set up their habitat, Elephant dung on the routes through which the elephants could go, the water bodies where the elephant could drink water were all surveyed.

The forest guards, armed with various protective equipment, went into the forest area to make an accurate survey of the elephants that could have migrated from the forest areas of Tamil Nadu to the forests of Kerala and Karnataka.
