Bjp women's wing national president and Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi Srinivasan has demanded Rs 25 lakh in ex-gratia for the families of the three Srirangam Veda School students who died after being washed away in the flood as the water was suddenly released into the Kollidam river.
Coimbatore: BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan has demanded an ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakh each to the families of three students of Srirangam Vedic School who drowned in kollidam river.
In a statement, she said,
'Acharya Shriman Bhattar Gurukulam', a Vedic school, is functioning at Melavasal Pattarthoppu, Srirangam, Trichy. More than 50 children are studying the Vedas in the special classes held here during the summer vacations.
Students at this gurukul used to bath in the nearby Kollidam river. Similarly, in the early hours of May 14, Gopalakrishnan (17) of Nasiyanur in Erode district, Vishnuprasad (13) and Hariprasad (14) of Mannargudi in Tiruvarur district, and Venkatagiridhar Thaisooriya Abhiram (14) of Guntur in Andhra Pradesh took a bath in the Kollidam river.
Generally, there is not much inflow of water into the Kollidam river. Since it is also summer, the water will be less. It is in that belief that the boys have bathed there. But, without any prior notice, water has suddenly been released in Kollidam. As a result, the four boys, who were bathing in Kollidam, were washed away in the water.
"The news that Gopalakrishnan and three other children have died is shocking and painful." There is excruciating anguish when one considers how the minds of parents who have lost their children will endure.
The three boys died as a result of an unexpected flow of water into the Kollidam river. The government must be held accountable. The Government of Tamil Nadu should take appropriate action against those responsible for this irresponsibility. A compensation of Rs 25 lakh each should be given to the families of the children who died due to the negligence of the government.
People should be informed in advance about the release of water in rivers like Kollidam. In areas where people usually bathe, arrangements should also be made to prevent anyone from taking a bath. Warning boards should also be placed. The Government of Tamil Nadu should take necessary steps to prevent such deaths from occurring in future. Thus, the report said.
