Farmers protested with sugarcane in support of private mills and demanded the suspension of Shanmuganathan, managing director of Udumalai Amaravathi Cooperative Sugar Mills, which is operated by employees in unison.
Tirupur: Farmers protested with sugarcane, demanding the suspension of the managing director of the Amaravathi Cooperative Sugar Mill at Udumalpet.

The Amaravathi Cooperative Sugar Mill in Tirupur district is a 62-year-old sugar mill. Shanmuganathan, the plant's managing director, is currently alleged to be working in favour of private sugar mills.This has led to the closure of the sugar mill very soon.

Meanwhile, more than 100 farmers with sugarcane staged a protest in front of the Amaravathi Co-operative Sugar Mills office demanding the dismissal of the managing director, who is running the employees in unison.

In this protest, the Amaravathi Cooperative Sugar Mill should be renovated, and the farmers' sugarcane should be completely crushed. Rs 4,000 per tonne of sugarcane should be paid, and the money should be disbursed within a fortnight.

Additional sugarcane officers should be appointed. Crop loans should be provided. They raised slogans demanding release of bio-water for the sugarcane crop in the Amaravati main canal for 21 days and filling up of vacant posts in the plant. Slogans were also raised condemning the managing director.
