Food safety officials inspect 249 shops - 44,593 kg of gutkha, pan masala seized in Coimbatore

The food safety department conducted an inspection of 249 shops in Coimbatore and seized 44.593 kg of gutkha and pan masala banned by the government. A total fine of Rs 1.20 lakh has been imposed on the owners of the shops.


Coimbatore: In case of any detection of trade in banned tobacco products, they can contact the Food Safety Department's WhatsApp number 94440 42322 and the details of the informers will be kept confidential, the Coimbatore district collector has said.

District Food Safety Officers led by District Designated Officer Thamilselvan conducted a surprise field inspection in coimbatore district from 18th to 23rd Of this month. This field survey was carried out in about 249 shops.

During the inspection, around 44.593 kg of pan masala and gutkha, a tobacco product banned by the Tamil Nadu government, were seized and destroyed in 249 shops.



The market value of the seized pan masala and gutkha is around Rs 44,593. At the end of the field survey, notices were issued by the Food Safety Department to 24 shops that committed the crime for the first time.

A total fine of Rs 1.20 lakh has been imposed on 249 shops selling banned tobacco products like pan masala and gutka, which are banned by the government, at the rate of Rs 5,000.

District Collector Kranti Kumar Padi said such surprise field inspections would be conducted across the district and continuous monitoring would be carried out.

In case of any detection of such banned tobacco products trading, they can contact the Food Safety Department's WhatsApp number 94440 42322 and inform the informants will be kept confidential, the collector said.
