Zestful volunteers join hands to clean the Selvachinthamani lake.

In the recent months, Sundays have become the most active part of the week for a group of NGOs and environmentalists of this city,  who have been  dedicating their time and energy to restore the water bodies of this city back to a pristine state.

Starting from pooling in like-minded volunteers who comprise of students, residents men, women and children and arranging all other resources like trash cans, safety equipments like gloves, face masks these NGOs are exhibiting true determination and proving their unconditional love for this city.

The notable part of this restoration and cleaning drives is the involvement of City Corporation , who render all additional support like JCB's, man power support and clearing the collected trash.

This morning, hundreds of spirited volunteers were engaged in cleaning the trash at the Selvachinthamani Kulam in Perur. This water body plays a pivotal role in carrying the water to rest of the water bodies and also home for many migratory birds.

Wastes comprising of plastics bottles, polythene covers, old clothes, torn beds and much more trash was collected by the volunteers.

Corporation Commissioner Dr.K. Vijayakarthikeyan also was there amongst the volunteers to guide them and help them devise more such initiatives to accomplish the ultimatum.

He also passed orders to serve notice to the factories along the Selvachinthaman kulam to refrain from dumping their wastes into the water body. While interacting with the locals of that area, he also assured to enhance  the sanitation standards in that area by construction additional toilets.

Speaking on today's initiative, Timple Luloo, an energetic volunteer who takes part in most of the cleaning drives and also aiding the NGOs in pooling volunteers shared with us that 'Nearly 200 volunteers including school and college students have joined hands for cleaning the Selvachinthamani kulam.

Corporation has always been very supportive in such endeavours. For today's cleaning drive, 2 lorries to carry the collected trash and 20 corporation cleaning staff have been deployed to ease our work.

During today's drive,  we found that a beverage company located on the banks of the lake has been contaminating the lake by releasing all its processed wastes into the lake. Corporation Commissioner who visited the lake has assured us to initiate immediate action on the issue.

We have planned to continue this cleaning initiate for the next two days and on very Sundays. We are hopeful that within two weeks time, the Selvachinthamani lake will be free of garbage' Timple said.

Instead of whining over things, these enthusiastic group of NGOs and like-minded people have set their course towards bringing a change in the environment. Definetly, it is a sigh of success as most of the volunteers vowed to make up every Sunday to  actively participate in the cleaning drive and bring more such volunteers.
