In Coimbatore, seven senior students from a local college were arrested for allegedly assaulting and forcibly shaving the head of a sophomore student. The incident took place in the college hostel where the second-year student, identified as Tharanitharan from Tirupur Rayarpalayam, was studying. The accused, including students Venkatesh, Madhavan, Mani, and seniors Iyyappan, Santhosh, and Yalish, were taken into custody by the Peelamedu police.

The events unfolded when the seven seniors reportedly entered room number 225, where the 18-year-old victim resided, and forcibly took him to room 401. The student was subjected to verbal abuse, physical assault, and head-shaving until 5:30 AM. Following the ordeal, the victim informed his parents, who immediately traveled from Tirupur to address the situation.

The parents approached the PSG College administration with a complaint, but allege they were encouraged to settle the matter privately to avoid tarnishing the college’s reputation. Distressed by their son’s harrowing experience, the parents filed an official complaint with the Peelamedu police station.

The immediate investigation by the police confirmed the ragging and assault by the senior students. Consequently, the seven accused were arrested and face multiple charges including ragging under relevant sections of the law, assault, use of obscene language, causing harm with weapons, and criminal intimidation.

This arrest has caused a stir in Coimbatore, especially given the widespread efforts to curb ragging in colleges. The incident at the esteemed institution has brought renewed focus on the need for stringent anti-ragging measures.
