Coimbatore Rail Users Association Seeks Renaming of Key Railway Stations in Coimbatore

The Association has requested the renaming of four major railway stations, Coimbatore Junction, North, Podanur and Irugur to Coimbatore Central, North, South and East respectively to reflect their importance and connectivity in the rapidly growing city.


Coimbatore: Over the past decade, Coimbatore has experienced significant growth, with its population surpassing 2 million. Including the floating population, this number exceeds 5 million. The expanded urban area could potentially reach 3 million.

Key to Coimbatore's development is its four terminal railway stations, crucial for safe travel across the region, state, and various parts of the country.

Representatives, railway officials, and notably, the Tamil Nadu Government have been urged to rename the following railway stations:

Current Name: Coimbatore Junction

New Name: Coimbatore Central.

Current Name: Coimbatore North

New Name: Coimbatore North Junction.

Current Name: Podanur Junction

New Name: Coimbatore South Junction.

Existing Name: Irugur

New Name: Coimbatore East Junction.

Irugur serves as a pivotal railway equipment center in Coimbatore.

This initiative is led by the Rail Passengers Associations of Coimbatore, emphasizing the need for better recognition and connectivity of these stations.
