Corporation officials seize 5 tons of plastic bags worth 3.5 lakhs, deadline for usage fixed as 1st May

In a bid to ban plastic bags less than 50 microns, the Corporation Officials today conducted a surprise inspection at Thomas Street and Raja Street and seized close to 5 tons of plastic bag worth Rs. 3.5. lakhs. The Corporation has issued directives that plastic bags that are less than 50 microns has been banned from usage from 1st May on wards. 



'The menace caused by usage and disposal of plastic bags is increasing day by day. City Corporation is taking all that is required to eradicate the usage of plastics by sensitizing people with alternatives like cloth bags, paper bags and other eco-friendly bags.



In this regard an exhibition on alternative to plastics has been organised at RS Puram, Kalaiarangam on 24th and 25th of March. People are asked to visit the expo and widened their knowledge on these alternatives and start using them in their daily lives.

Post 1st May, those traders dealing in plastic bags less than 50 microns will be levied fine along with strict legal action', said Corporation Commissioner Dr. K. Vijayakarthikeyan.
