Corporation seizes 5860 kg of plastic covers less than 50 microns in five days.

The officials from Corporation and Health department today conducted surprise raids in several shops in Thomas Street of Ward No:80 of Central zone and seized close to 400 kg of Plastic bags that were less than 50 microns. 

Starting from 21st March till date, 5860 kg of plastic cover from shops at 100 feet road, Thomas Street, Raja street, Gandhipuram, Anna market on Mettupalayam Road were seized by the Corporation Officials. The officials during the inspection also advised the traders to act responsibly by opting for eco-friendly bags and also insisting the customers to bring their own shopping bags. 

Over the past few months, Corporation Officials and NGOs are on an awareness spree to terminate plastic usage in the city, as the menace due to plastic is alarming. advising traders to switch over to eco-friendly products. Still, a majority of the traders continue to use plastic covers less than 50 microns.  Hence, Corporation has opted to take tough stance against the plastic usage and has imposed a ban of plastic covers which are less than 50 microns, from 1st of May, 2017 on wards.
