Hollow Block Manufacturers in Tirupur District Protest Due to Price Hike in Raw Materials

Hollow block manufacturers in Tirupur have halted production and sales in protest against the steep increase in prices of raw materials like crusher jalli, M-sand, and P-sand, urging for government intervention to reduce costs.

Tirupur: Hollow block manufacturers across Tirupur district have entered into a protest by halting production and sales due to a significant hike in the prices of essential raw materials.

Last month, the prices of materials such as crusher jalli, M-sand, and P-sand were increased by the producers by Rs. 1000 per unit, forcing hollow block manufacturers to purchase at higher rates. This sudden price surge has compelled them to increase the selling price of hollow blocks by up to Rs. 6, resulting in a sales deadlock with millions of rupees worth of hollow blocks unsold across the district.

Hollow blocks, an alternative to traditional bricks, are widely used in construction due to their cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits. However, the steep price hike has led to reluctance among the general public and construction sector to purchase, directly impacting the livelihoods of manufacturers.

The strike by hollow block manufacturers is estimated to result in a daily production loss of up to Rs. 5 crores and a potential tax revenue loss to the government of nearly half a crore rupees. It is reported that approximately 25,000 workers are being directly and indirectly affected by this strike. The manufacturers demand immediate government action to regulate the prices of raw materials, ensuring the sustainability of the hollow block production industry in Tirupur district.
