Karpagam Institutions Partner with BHEL's Welding Research Institute for Advanced Welding Training

Karpagam Academy of Higher Education, along with its engineering colleges, has entered a collaborative agreement with BHEL's Welding Research Institute to enhance student training in advanced welding techniques, marking a significant step towards industry-academic collaboration.


Coimbatore: In a significant move towards bolstering academic-industry ties, Karpagam Academy of Higher Education (KAHE), Karpagam College of Engineering (KCE), and Karpagam Institute of Technology (KIT) have forged a partnership with the Welding Research Institute (WRI) of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Tiruchirappalli. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed at the KAHE premises on February 14, 2024, setting the stage for advanced training and research in welding and metal joining processes.



Vice-Chancellor of KAHE, Prof. Dr. B. Venkatachalapathy, emphasized the commitment of the Karpagam Group of Institutions to establishing centers of excellence in emerging technologies and research to prepare students for industry challenges. The collaboration with WRI is aimed at equipping students with industry-relevant skills in the field of advanced welding.



WRI, recognized as India's premier research center in welding and related processes, through its officials I. Kalyanasundaram (AGM/HEAD WRI) and Dr.B.Shanmugarajan (SDGM/WRI, BHEL), expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting the mutual benefits of academic collaboration to promote welding training and research. They introduced the opportunities for student training under the MHI funded Common Engineering Facility Centre (CEFC 5000) project, which will greatly benefit the students of Karpagam institutions.



The event was marked by an active interaction between WRI officials and students from KCE, KIT, and KAHE, indicating a promising future for the participants in the advanced welding sector. The signing was witnessed by key faculty members from the Karpagam institutions, including Registrar Dr. S.Ravi, Principals Dr. V. Kumar Chinnaiyan (KCE) and Dr. P. Manimaran (KIT), Dean Faculty of Engineering Dr. A. Amudha, and Heads of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. C. Krishnaraj (KCE) and Dr. A. Saiyathibrahim (KIT), along with the Head Centre for Material Science Dr. S. Manivannan.

This MoU marks a significant milestone in bridging the gap between academia and industry, preparing students for the demands of the welding industry and enhancing their employability in the engineering sector.
