Coimbatore Protests Against 6 Trains Rerouted by Southern Railways

Coimbatore residents and business groups are protesting Southern Railways' decision to reroute six trains away from Coimbatore Junction, fearing economic impact and inconvenience to passengers. The community awaits a response from the authorities.

Coimbatore: In a significant move that has sparked widespread concern, Southern Railways' decision to reroute six key trains from Kerala through Pollachi and Podanur, effectively bypassing the major Coimbatore Junction, has led to protests from the city's residents. The rerouting includes prominent trains such as the Chennai Express, Thiruvananthapuram-Delhi Express, Kumari-Dibrugarh Vivek Express, Ernakulam-Patna Express, and both Kochi Velachery-Santragachi and Hubli Expresses. This decision has alarmed community leaders and business groups, who fear the economic repercussions and the inconvenience this will pose to passengers relying on these services.

The Coimbatore Junction, known for its significant contribution to the economy as the third-highest revenue-generating station in the Southern Railways network, appears to be overlooked, protestors argue, due to neglect and a lack of development focus by railway authorities. "Rerouting these trains will severely impact our businesses and industries," a local business owner stated, highlighting the distress within the business community over the potential loss of connectivity and economic downturn. Furthermore, passengers accustomed to traveling to Kerala and other destinations are facing major travel disruptions.

The community's response has been to urge Southern Railways to reassess and potentially reverse this decision, emphasizing the negative effects it could have on Coimbatore's economic health and passenger convenience. As the protests continue, the spotlight is on Southern Railways for an official statement or explanation regarding the rationale behind the rerouting, with speculation about operational streamlining and demand concerns for Coimbatore stops being potential reasons. This situation underscores the ongoing challenge of balancing operational efficiency with the needs and well-being of the communities served by the railway network.
