Officials seize 5 tons of artificially ripened mango and chickoo fruits from Ukkadam.

This morning, the Officials from the Food Safety and Standards Department conducted a surprise check at the Ukkadam Wholesale Fruits Market to ascertain if artificial ripening chemicals were used on the fruits.

During this check, it was found that Carbide stones and other chemicals were used to ripen mango and chickoo fruits. Close to 5 tons of those fruits were seized by the officials. 'Despite, instructed to refrain from using artificial ripening techniques, the traders continue to indulge in such harmful activities which pose a serious threat to the consumers' said the officials.

Designated Officer of Food Safety and Standards Department, Vijay stated that, 'Every year during the Mango season, the traders indulge in such artificial ripening activities to sell the products at higher price and meet the demand. A new chemical 'Ehylene-based' from China has been used to ripen the fruits, which is said to be more effective in ripening the fruits and more dangerous to health, as well.

The people who consume these artificially ripened fruits are prone to skin allergies, nervous disorders, intestinal issues, cancers and many other diseases. Hence, orders have been asked to the traders to refrain from such ill-acts. We have planned to consult more surprise checks through the season'.
