BJP Seeks Permission for PM Modi's Roadshow in Coimbatore

BJP has applied for permission to conduct a 4-km roadshow for Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Coimbatore on March 18 (timing not known), with the route spanning from Eru Company to the Post Office junction at R.S. Puram.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) approached the Coimbatore City Police on Thursday, seeking approval to organize a roadshow featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi, planned to cover a distance of 4 kilometers on March 18. The proposed route for the roadshow extends from Eru Company on Mettupalayam Road to the Head Post Office junction at R.S. Puram.

As of Thursday evening, the police had yet to issue the green light for the event, taking into consideration the extensive distance requested, potential traffic disruptions, and coinciding school examinations.

The request for such a lengthy roadshow is unprecedented in recent times, according to police sources, who noted that no party has been granted permission for a similar event in the near past.

The chosen endpoint for the roadshow, R.S. Puram, bears historical significance due to its connection to a bomb explosion near the site of a scheduled public meeting by then BJP president L.K. Advani, ahead of the Lok Sabha polls in February 1998. This location has since become a memorial spot, with BJP and RSS affiliates annually commemorating the victims of the terror attack and advocating for a memorial.

The strategic selection of R.S. Puram for the roadshow's culmination is underscored by its central position amidst five Assembly constituencies: Coimbatore North, Coimbatore South, Thondamuthur, Kavundampalaym, and Singanallur. This locality is viewed as a focal point for gathering support from surrounding areas.

Party sources indicated that a significant turnout is expected from the western district, with the roadshow timing proposed for the afternoon, pending police approval. BJP’s Tamil Nadu State general secretary A.P. Muruganandam has been entrusted with the responsibility of organizing the event, underscoring the significance attached to the roadshow in the party's local strategy.
