Election Commission's flying squad seized Rs 8.59 lakh from a DMK leader's car in The Nilgiris yesterday, with BJP workers and officials engaging in a quarrel during the operation.
Coimbatore: On Wednesday, the Election Commission's flying squad conducted a successful operation in The Nilgiris, where they confiscated Rs 8.59 lakh in cash from the vehicle of Nellai Kannan, a DMK union secretary of Kotagiri. The car, managed by driver Naveen Kumar, was stationed at Sakkatha locality near Kotagiri when the squad acted upon a tip-off regarding money distribution.
During the search, the squad not only found the cash but also seized campaign materials, including DMK pamphlets and mufflers. The situation intensified as BJP workers started recording the incident, leading to a confrontation while the officials were counting the seized money.
In a related incident, Nagapattinam officials confiscated Rs 3.50 lakh from two individuals on motorcycles at Thirumarugal and Sheshamoolai, further intensifying the vigilance on unaccounted cash flow during the election period.
