Rising Temperatures in Coimbatore Lead to Increased Tender Coconut Prices

Due to an unprecedented heatwave starting this summer in Coimbatore, the prices of tender coconut have surged from Rs. 35-40 last month to Rs. 45 as of April 23.

Coimbatore: As the summer season ushers in a severe heatwave across Coimbatore, residents are finding solace in cooling beverages like tender coconut, watermelon, lemon, orange, and sugarcane juice. The intense heat has significantly increased the demand for these refreshing drinks, particularly tender coconut, known for its cooling properties.

This surge in demand has warmed up the sales at various tender coconut stalls throughout the city. From last month’s price range of Rs. 35 to Rs. 40, the cost of a single tender coconut has now risen to Rs. 45. The local vendors anticipate that if the scorching weather continues, the price might even reach Rs. 50 per coconut.

Interestingly, Coimbatore primarily sources its tender coconuts from nearby regions like Pollachi, Thondamuthur, and Kinathukadavu. The vendors in these areas have noted a significant uptick in demand as people seek relief from the blistering heat. This demand spike has led to the current increase in price, echoing the natural supply-demand dynamics during peak summer months.

Local coconut vendors relay that if the high temperatures persist as they have been, the reliance on tender coconuts for respite from the heat will only grow, potentially pushing the prices even higher as summer progresses.
