Increase in Fish Prices Due to Reduced Supply in Pollachi

In Pollachi, fish prices have risen by Rs. 100 to Rs. 300 as the supply from Tuticorin and Rameswaram has decreased due to the fishing ban.

Coimbatore: The fish market in Pollachi, which usually sources sea fish from areas like Tuticorin and Rameswaram, is facing a significant supply drop. On average, the market receives about 1 to 1.5 tons of fish daily.

However, due to the ongoing fishing ban, motorized fishing boats are restricted from venturing into the sea, causing a steep decline in fish supply to Pollachi. Consequently, the prices of fish as of April 23 have surged from Rs. 100 to Rs. 300, burdening local consumers.

Local fishmongers and consumers are feeling the pinch as the reduced supply has led to an increase in fish prices across the market. This situation underscores the broader challenges faced during the fishing ban, which aims at conserving fish populations during breeding seasons but also impacts the livelihoods of those dependent on fishing.
