Decision to Relocate Captive Elephants in Coimbatore Due to Severe Drought

The Coimbatore Forest Department has decided to relocate 26 captive elephants from Kozhikamuthi Elephant Camp in Topslip due to lack of water and severe drought conditions.


Coimbatore: The sweltering summer heat in Coimbatore hasn't spared even the wildlife regions. Amidst 89% rainfall deficit in the district, the dire lack of water resources at the Anamalai Topslip’s Kozhikamuthi Elephant Camp is causing severe hardships. Due to acute water scarcity and shortage of fodder triggered by severe drought conditions, the Forest Department has announced the relocation of 26 captive elephants housed there. The decision was made public on April 25, aimed at ensuring better living conditions for the elephants amidst environmental stressors.
