A special court in Coimbatore sentenced Jayakumar, 43, from Vellore district to 12 years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 1 lakh fine for smuggling 22 kg of cannabis. He was arrested by the Narcotic Control Division police during a vehicle check near Shanthi Theatre bus stop in August 2019.
Coimbatore: A special court for narcotic cases in Coimbatore has sentenced a man to 12 years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh for smuggling cannabis in the city.
The Coimbatore Narcotic Control Division police received credible information that cannabis was being smuggled on Bharath State Bank Road in the city limits. Acting on this tip-off, on August 6, 2019, Assistant Inspector Saleth Mary and a team of police personnel conducted vehicle checks near the Shanthi Theatre bus stop area.
During the inspection, the police noticed a suspicious person carrying two large bags and intercepted him for examination. Upon searching the bags, the police discovered 22 kilograms of cannabis concealed inside them. The accused was identified as Jayakumar, 43, a resident of Mandakkarai Street, Saananguppam, Ambur in Vellore district. The police immediately registered a case and arrested him on the spot.
The case was subsequently tried at the Coimbatore Special Court for Narcotic Cases. After the completion of the trial proceedings, Judge Rajalingam delivered the verdict on March 26. The court found Jayakumar guilty and sentenced him to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 1 lakh. Special Public Prosecutor V Sivakumar represented the government in this case.
