Elephants Relocated from Kozhikamuthi Training Camp Due to Severe Drought

Due to severe drought in the Western Ghats near Pollachi, 20 elephants from the Kozhikamuthi training camp are being relocated to areas with adequate water resources.

Coimbatore: The Kozhikamuthi elephant training camp, located in the Western Ghats near Pollachi, is currently facing an acute water scarcity prompting the Forest Department to relocate 20 elephants to different forest regions with better water availability. The camp, which supervises 26 elephants under forest department guidance, has been particularly affected by the harsh dry conditions.

Twenty elephants are being transferred to Manampalli, Varagaliar, and Chinnar forest areas - five to each, except for Chinnar, which will receive ten. These elephants, which include some trained as 'Kumkis' (trained elephants used to manage wild elephants), are temporarily moved to ensure their well-being.

The relocated elephants will be maintained in these areas for at least three to four months or until the conditions at Kozhikamuthi are deemed suitable for their return. Forest officials have highlighted the necessity of this move to ensure the survival and health of the elephants during this period of extreme drought.
