In response to increasing thefts, Coimbatore goldsmiths supply additional CCTV cameras to police, focusing on areas with high jewelry production like Selvapuram.
Coimbatore: As incidents of theft targeting goldsmiths in Coimbatore rise, the local artisan goldsmiths have taken proactive steps by supplying additional CCTV cameras to enhance security measures in key jewelry manufacturing areas. Recognizing Coimbatore as a significant hub for gold jewelry production, which supplies valuable gold items worth crores to states like Karnataka, Kerala, and other northern regions, the need for heightened security has become evident.

The recent spike in thefts, including a case where gold jewelry was stolen from a manufacturer, has prompted this initiative. The Coimbatore Artisan Gold Manufacturers Association has delivered 25 surveillance cameras to the police commissioner that will be installed in high-traffic areas within the goldsmith community. They further plan to supply over 100 CCTV cameras as part of an ongoing effort to curb these criminal activities. Initially, 25 cameras have been installed in the Selvapuram police station limits to increase nighttime patrolling and security.

Ragunathan Suppiah, the president of the Coimbatore Artisan Gold Manufacturers Association, emphasized that with areas like Selvapuram, RS Puram, and Variety Hall Road housing numerous jewelry workshops, the additional surveillance will aid in boosting security for both individual goldsmiths and wholesale jewelers. Such measures also assist law enforcement in their investigations, ensuring a safer environment for the flourishing gold jewelry industry in Coimbatore.
