Bid to block trains: 51 farmers held in Thanjavur

Thanjavur: At least 51 farmers including a lone woman were arrested when they attempted to block train at two places (Thanjavur and Kumbakonam) in the district today condemning the Central Government for betraying Tamil Nadu and urging the Central Government to immediately constitute the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) and drop the plan to set up a single tribunal to hear all inter-state water disputes.

Led by R Sugumaran, vice-president of Joint Movement of Farmers’ Associations, a group of farmers attempted to block the Cholan Express train at Thanjavur railway junction. Police, however, swung into action and arrested 21 persons in this connection.

In Kumbakonam, police arrested 30 persons including a woman when they attempted to block train. They were led by Swamimalai Vimalanathan, district secretary of Cauvery Farmers Protection Association.

Activists of  CPI(M), holding black flags in their arms, staged a slogan shouting demonstration in front of the Head Post Office in Thanjavur in a show of solidarity with the agitating farmers. Likewise, the members of Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, affiliated to CPI, burnt the copies of the order enabling the centre to set up a single tribunal near Anna statue. They also staged a slogan shouting agitation.

The one-day bandh, called by various farmers associations, evoked a very poor response. All the shops and business establishments in the district remained open and functioned as usual.
