Tragic Incident at Velliangiri Hills in Coimbatore Claims a Life

One lost their life at Velliangiri Hills in Coimbatore on April 28 as a group visited the site. Emergency services were called, and an investigation is underway.

Coimbatore: A tragic incident occurred on Velliangiri Hills, a popular spiritual destination in Coimbatore, when a visitor died during a pilgrimage on April 28. The hills, known as South Kailash, attract thousands of devotees annually who come to witness the self-manifested Shivalinga after trekking across seven hills.

The deceased, identified as Punnikodi from Thiruvallur district, began his journey with nine others. They had just commenced the treacherous ascent after visiting the base temple. During the first hill's ascent, Punnikodi suffered severe abdominal pains and vomiting, prompting his fellow climbers to rush him downhill.

Upon reaching the foothills, an emergency call was made, and Punnikodi was transported via a 108 ambulance service to the Pooluvapatti Government Hospital at Alandurai at around 5 PM. Medical examinations confirmed that he had already passed away by the time he reached the hospital.

The Alandurai police were notified, and the body was taken to Coimbatore Government Hospital for an autopsy. The police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident. This case marks the ninth death this year of individuals climbing the mountain, underlying the potential hazards of the pilgrimage.
