Sri Lankan Refugees in Pollachi Seek Immediate Allocation of Constructed Houses

Sri Lankan refugees at a camp in Kottur, Pollachi, petitioned for immediate housing allocation, citing long-term temporary accommodation and upcoming school openings as major concerns.

Coimbatore: In Pollachi's Kottur area, 217 Sri Lankan refugee families have been residing since 2000 in a camp that was recently renovated by the government, resulting in the construction of 112 houses. Initially, these families were placed in rented accommodations around the campsite.

However, while 12 families received new homes, 15 families are left without permanent houses in the Azhiyar region, despite the completion of housing settlements. The families claim lack of electricity among other utilities in the newly built, yet unallocated homes, and fear the prospective hardship in shuttling their children to schools from the remote camp to schools in Azhiyar. Furthermore, they've submitted a petition to the Coimbatore District officials requesting the immediate issuance of these houses and addressing basic amenities to facilitate their living and schooling needs efficiently.
