Awareness Campaign to Rescue Nallusamiyappan Reservoir

Awareness signs about rare species at Nallusamiyappan Reservoir installed today. The public's involvement is crucial for rehabilitating water bodies affected by pollution.

Coimbatore: In a significant effort to raise awareness and rehabilitate the polluted Nallusamiyappan Reservoir, several banners educating the public about the diverse life forms residing in the reservoir were put up today. The Nallusamiyappan Reservoir, like many urban water bodies, faces numerous challenges due to pollution and degradation. However, it is only with scientific approaches and the active involvement of the community that efforts to recover such ecosystems can succeed.

The project to rejuvenate this ecosystem has thus far included several critical steps:

1. Gathering current opinions from locals concerning the condition of the water body, previously studied in Sambrani Kuttai and IT Park areas last year.

2. A biodiversity assessment was conducted to understand the variety of life forms existing, including 120 species of plants, over 100 insect species, and approximately 30 types of birds.

3. Removal of around 300 kg of plastic and sanitary waste from the shores, which was completed with the help of volunteers.

4. The installation of awareness banners about the reservoir's importance and particularly about the unique species found in Nallusamiyappan Reservoir.

The local administrative council has swiftly granted approval for these initiatives, expressing gratitude for their cooperation. Further stages of work will continue in the coming days, aiming for community understanding and further engagement in preserving the Nallusamiyappan Reservoir.

Joint efforts by RAAC and Kausika Neerkarangal are significantly appreciated in these initiatives.
