Traditional Donkey Wedding Held Near Annur to Invoke Rainfall

Villagers near Annur in Coimbatore district organized a traditional donkey wedding hoping to invoke rainfall amidst a severe drought. The event featured elaborate rituals and decorations for the donkeys.

Coimbatore: In a unique blend of tradition and hope, villagers near Annur, Coimbatore, orchestrated a 'wedding' for two donkeys to invoke rainfall amidst persistent drought conditions in the region. The ceremonial event took place in the village of Lakkepalayam, where water scarcity has been an ongoing issue.

The villagers carried out the wedding following the age-old belief that marrying donkeys can provoke rain. Yesterday, at the Subramaniyar Temple, a female donkey from Lakkepalayam and a male donkey from the neighboring Kovilpalayam were chosen as the bride and groom, respectively.

The bride donkey was adorned with a sari, bangles, and jewels to fulfill bridal decorum, while the groom donkey was dressed in a traditional dhoti and shirt, completing his groom's look. The ceremony included inviting the pair, followed by a series of rituals and prayers at the temple, culminating with the tying of the 'thaali' (sacred marriage thread) around the bride donkey's neck, symbolizing their union.
