In Coimbatore, the NGO Siruthuli has started the cleaning of Kuniyamuthur Raja Vaikkal to remove obstructing vegetation, enhancing water flow to four local lakes, following permissions from authorities.
Coimbatore: Founded in 2003 by a group of environmental enthusiasts, Siruthuli has been actively involved in various eco-friendly initiatives including Water Conservation, Afforestation, Wastewater Treatment, Awareness Creation, and Farmers Development.
One of their recent endeavors focuses on the Kuniyamuthur area where the local Anaicut, crucial for the water supply, feeds into four major lakes: Ganganarayana Samudhram, Sottaiyandi Kuttai, Perur Big Tank, and Sengulam Lake. These lakes are interconnected through the Kuniyamuthur Raja Vaikkal.

Recently, difficulties in water flow due to dense vegetation blocking the Vaikkal were highlighted by the local farming community, prompting an intervention. Siruthuli, with approvals from the District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati and the Water Resources Department, alongside guidance from the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation, has initiated a significant cleaning project. This initiative aims to remove the wild bushes and thorns that hinder the water flow, ensuring that water reaches all connected lakes more efficiently.
This cleaning not only promises to improve irrigation but also supports the ecology of the area by maintaining appropriate water levels in the lakes.
